Write well to think well
Evening 👋
1/ Quote I’ve been thinking about 📣
"If people cannot write well, they cannot think well, and if they cannot think well, others will do their thinking for them"
George Orwell (Novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic)
For about the last 2 years, I’ve been employed to write every day.
I write, I edit, I write, I revise. I scrutinise the words and consider their order.
I’ve discovered that repeating the process of writing also benefits my thinking and my speaking.
I consider:
What order of information makes the most sense?
How much information is enough at any one time?
What’s the 1 thing I want someone to take away or do?
What context do they need to understand me?
The benefits of being a good writer extend beyond the written word alone.
2/ Some tweet about writing 🐦
It can be a bit unnerving at first, but you must get other people to read what you write. You can be your own fresh eyes given enough time away from the words.
Pay attention to any word or sentence that needs re-reading. It’s obviously troublesome.
Until your reader can slip through without getting caught, there are words to clip and sentences to prune.
Have a good week,
John
